Born in 1954, Börsch-Supan studied economics and mathematics in Munich and Bonn and received his Ph.D. in economics from M.I.T. in Cambridge (USA) in 1984 under Daniel McFadden. From 1984 to 1989 he was an Assistant Professor at the J.F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. After teaching economic theory at Dortmund University and macroeconomics and economic policy at the University of Mannheim, he founded the Mannheim Research Institute for the Economics of Aging (MEA) in 2001. Börsch-Supan is a lifetime member of the Council of Advisors to the German Economics Ministry and was four years its chairperson. He co-chaired the German Pension Reform group of the “Rürup-Commission”, and was a member of the German President’s Commission on Demographic Change. Börsch-Supan has served as a consultant to many governments, including France and Italy, and international organizations such as the OECD, the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, among others. Since November 2010 Börsch-Supan has been a scientific member of the Max Planck Society. He was a director at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy from 2011-2022 and has been director emeritus of the Institute since Jan. 1, 2023. Börsch-Supan is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the MacArthur Foundation Aging Societies Network. He is also the Principal Investigator and Managing Director of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE).
